I designed this scenario to explore a darker, less heroic side of Dungeons & Dragons, focusing on a grim atmosphere and an investigation-driven experience.
At the heart of the story lies a cursed axe that the suspect cannot let go of, gradually driving him out of control. The challenge is to lead players to suspect the existence of the weapon—without ever confirming it until the very end.
The investigation is built around a wide range of clues, some of which are deliberately misleading, encouraging doubt and speculation. The atmosphere shifts between tension and strangeness, with occasional lighter elements to prevent it from becoming overwhelming.
This scenario was born from my discovery of the Astral Dreadnought in Monsters of the Multiverse. The plot is the idea of immersing players in a strange environment whose true nature they do not immediately understand—until they realize they are inside a living creature.
The adventure focuses on discovery and surprise, featuring unusual and sometimes absurd encounters to create a memorable experience.
The atmosphere is built around a duality between mineral and organic elements, reinforcing the sense of strangeness and encouraging players to piece together the truth.
At first glance, this scenario follows a classic structure: a series of murders in a village leading to the exploration of a dungeon. However, the investigation gradually gives way to demons and betrayal, turning it into a more unconventional experience.
Set in the Stormbringer universe, I wanted to emphasize encounters with strange creatures that challenge the characters’ sanity, as well as the exploration of dark, symbolically rich locations.
Designed to remain accessible to players unfamiliar with the setting, the scenario offers a high degree of freedom and encourages player improvisation.
